John Dougan, Missouri State Archivist

Thursday, 4:00 p.m., T258–“Show Me Military Records: What You Can Find in Your State’s Adjutant General Records”
What do the Seminole War, Mormon War, Honey War, Mexican War, Southwest Expedition, Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, and even more recent conflicts all have in common? A heavy reliance on state provided soldiers and a rich store of useful genealogical records.

This session will focus on the numerous record series created by Adjutant General’s Offices across the country using Missouri as a model. Enlistments, service records, and discharges are just a few of the useful record series that you can expect to find among their records.

A brief history of the development of historic state militias to the modern National Guard will provide a context for the useful records that will be revealed. Almost every family is represented. The diversity of the records will surprise you.
