Thursday, 2:30 p.m., T243–“Unscrambling the New Orleans Passenger Lists”
An estimated 550,000 immigrants arrived at the Port of New Orleans between 1820 and 1860, making New Orleans the second most active port for immigration during this time period. In the decade before the Civil War, many Germans arrived in New Orleans and traveled up the Mississippi River to settle in the Midwest. Yet finding immigrant ancestors in overlapping and sometimes missing passenger lists can be challenging. This lecture presents the derivative sources created from the original lists and demonstrates how to use them to search elusive New Orleans arrivals.
