Thursday, 11 a.m.,T228–“Genealogy Treasures at the Missouri History Museum Library and Research Center”
The Missouri Historical Society (now known as the Missouri History Museum) was founded in 1866 and since that time has been collecting books, documents, photographs, objects, etc., to document the history of St. Louis, the state of Missouri, and the nineteenth-century American West. Among these collections are many unique items of great genealogical value.
This lecture will show and discuss dozens of examples of unique genealogical items from the collections of the Missouri History Museum Library and Research Center. Among the items discussed will be twentieth-century employee magazines published by St. Louis–area companies, which include articles regarding employees’ hobbies and military service; birth, death, and marriage announcements; photographs of employees' children; announcements of promotions and retirements; and photographs of employee sports teams. Also included will be examples of publications and records of Civil War veterans’ organizations; coroner’s inquests; school yearbooks; mid-nineteenth-century, non-federal St. Louis censuses; records of businesses, organizations, and institutions; letters and diaries; letterheads of old businesses; World War I biography and service questionnaires; photograph collections; maps and atlases; and topical scrapbooks of newspaper clippings such as St. Louis schools, St. Louis in World War II, and the necrology scrapbooks of death notices and obituaries.
Dennis will also offer tips on using the Missouri History Museum’s Genealogy and Local History Index (http://genealogy.mohistory.org) and guidance on using other catalogs, guides, and indexes on the website.
