Booth #413

The State Historical Society of Missouri:
Founded in 1898 and a trustee of the state since 1899, The State Historical Society of Missouri (SHSMO) is the premier research center for the study of Missouri state and local history.  The Society preserves and provides access to reference materials and historical collections through research centers located in Cape Girardeau, Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla, St. Louis, and Springfield. The Research Center–Columbia also houses a significant art collection with ongoing and varied exhibitions.

The Society’s mission is to collect, preserve, and share the history of Missouri and the Midwest.  SHSMO holdings include rare and specialized books such as city, county, and family histories, city directories, genealogy indexes, periodicals, and research files; an extensive newspaper collection dating from 1808 with newspapers from all 114 Missouri counties and the city of St. Louis; thousands of maps and photographs; oral histories; family and personal papers; and an art collection with major artworks by George Caleb Bingham and Thomas Hart Benton.

For individuals who are unable to visit, SHSMO staff will, for a nominal fee, conduct research on their behalf. For more information visit http://shs.umsystem.edu/research/requestform.php#researchfees.

The Society offers programs, lectures, workshops, group tours, and publishes the Missouri Historical Review.  This quarterly journal has been the cornerstone of the Society’s publications since 1906, offering articles on diverse topics in Missouri history.

The Society relies on membership support and gifts to help collect, preserve, and share Missouri's rich history. For more information visit http://shsofmo.org/store/shsmo-membership.html.
