Welcome to St. Charles/St. Louis, Missouri! I’m Larry Franke, reference librarian in the History and Genealogy Department at St. Louis County Library, home of the National Genealogical Society’s Book Loan Collection. Before joining the department in 2000, I taught English as a Second Language and French (among other subjects) for 20+ years. Since St. Louis was founded by the French in 1764, and, due to its location within the Louisiana Territory, being governed by either the French or Spanish, all of the early local church and civil records are in either the French or Spanish language. I enjoy helping our patrons understand and use documents from that time period. In addition to assisting patrons, I teach genealogy classes, manage the history and genealogy periodicals, write and revise collection guides, and locate items to add to our collection.
During my presentation, I will be talking about what we have in our department to help patrons with their research. I hope you will, at a minimum, come to the History and Genealogy Department for a tour, and if possible, spend some time familiarizing yourself with the collection… and researching! Bring your laptop/tablet or use one of our public computers to access subscription genealogy databases; bring your flash drive to save images from microfilm or print paper copies. No bags, food or drink are allowed in the department, but you can eat or drink to your heart’s content on the main floor. See you soon!
