Exhibitor Profile-The Newberry

The Newberry is a world-renowned independent research library in Chicago that is home to collections spanning six centuries and has provided a community of learning and service since 1887. Free and open to the public, it houses an extensive non-circulating collection of rare books, maps, and manuscripts. The Newberry takes particular care in meeting the needs of genealogists. There is a reference desk devoted solely to genealogical services staffed by librarians with extensive experience in the field.

The Newberry collection strengths include: family histories, local histories for counties and cities nationwide, city directories, biographical resources, vital record indexes, censuses, military records and histories, land ownership maps, and immigration information. The collection is nationwide in scope and is particularly strong in the Midwest and Chicago. Here are some highlights:

Genealogies
More than 17,000 published genealogies. Many rare titles covering gentry and noble families of the British Isles are also included.

Local Histories
The Newberry holds county, city, town, church, and other local histories from all regions of the United States, as well as from Canada and the British Isles.

Genealogical Source Material
Published indexes, abstracts and transcriptions of pre-twentieth century records of birth, death, and marriage, as well as probate, deed, court, tax, and cemetery records

Military Records
Roster and pension reference works covering the colonial wars through WWII. The Newberry’s collection of Civil War unit histories is one of the country’s best.

The Newberry is located right next to the Chicago Genealogical Society booth.
