"Why Great Grandpa Shaved Off His Mustache, Tales of Our Ancestors and the Weather."
"From what I have seen, nothing but the Mercy of the Supreme being has saved us on this hill." So wrote Col. Landon Carter in his Virginia plantation house on Feb. 10, 1776. The colonel had just experienced a freakish weather event that left him shaken and thankful to be alive. In 1946, in western
Missouri, a fast-approaching snow storm brought Howard Toms together with a stranded woman whom he had never seen before. She would become his wife. Days in January and February 1802, recorded Ichabod Foster in Whiting, Vermont, were as hot and pleasant as summertime. In the Texas Panhandle during the winter of 1885-86, relentless blizzards caused the "Big Die-Up"of cattle. Ranchers lost entire herds. Some cattlemen went broke. Henry Cresswell, though, hung on and prospered.. Weather played a role-sometimes, a decisive role-sometimes fortunate, sometimes tragic-in the lives of our ancestors. Some of the most exciting and significant episodes you may discover in the history of your family were occasioned by severe weather events. A variety of tales-amazing, funny, shocking, sad, thought-provoking tales-all true!-illustrates this lesson of genealogy.
